Classroom activities To bring the experience to life, we’ve developed activities that you can do in class. They’ve been designed to support the use of the digital tools, and to allow you to explore even more aspects of work with your pupils. There’s a natural progression through the activities, as laid out on the primary teacher section on the partner resources page. The activity outline provides guidance on the stage or year group that the activity is geared towards
Once trained and experienced, some teachers look for positions overseas. Many countries expect a teacher to have qualifications gained in that country, but sometimes there are reciprocal agreements
Animal me A fun quiz that lets pupils explore their personality. At the end, they’re assigned an animal, and given some ideas about the types of career that might suit them. My interests Lets pupils find out how their interests and likes can help them when they’re making decisions. Their results will give them some ideas about jobs they might be interested in for the future. Profile After completing the other tools, pupils can write statements about their personality, interests and skills in their profile. This can be downloaded and shared with others.
This strategy involves students becoming “experts” on one aspect of a topic, then sharing their expertise with others. Divide a topic into a few constitutive parts (“puzzle pieces”). Form subgroups of 3-5 and assign each subgroup a different “piece” of the topic (or, if the class is large, assign two or more subgroups to each subtopic). Each group’s task is to develop expertise on its particular subtopic by brainstorming, developing ideas, and if time permits, researching. Once students have become experts on a particular subtopic, shuffle the groups so that the members of each new group have a different area of expertise. Students then take turns sharing their expertise with the other group members, thereby creating a completed “puzzle” of knowledge about the main topic
A convenient way to assign different areas of expertise is to distribute handouts of different colours. For the first stage of the group work, groups are composed of students with the same colour of handout; for the second stage, each member of the newly formed groups must have a different colour of handout.
You can carry out your induction period in state schools (except those in special measures). You can also undertake induction in independent schools, free schools and academies, although they don’t have to offer it. It’s also possible to carry out your induction period through supply teaching. For more information, see the National Education Union – Your guide to induction.
The University of Waterloo acknowledges that our work is on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our institution is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land promised to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Indigenous Initiatives Office.
