Overuse of screen time can have adverse impacts on young brains, so it’s essential in these special circumstances to be extra careful when it comes to the littlest ones. As much as possible, parents should encourage print and book reading. If available, request textbooks from your child’s school along with other print materials in order to offset the amount of online learning they will be doing. Studies show that remote education can be challenging for all ages, but especially young kids, so do whatever you can and always err on the side of caution. Stimulate self-expression by having discussions with your children about what they are doing, and also encourage creative writing and imaginative story telling.

If parents are venturing out to shop and stock up on groceries, children can help by writing the list of what is needed. Depending on the age of the child, elements of mathematics could be incorporated here estimating prices and weights etc. Children could also work out which option is better value
We all know that a grá for reading is one of the most important gifts that we can pass on to our children. Use this opportunity to read a wide selection of books. Children can then write a review, give their personal opinion, talk about their favourite character and give a star rating. They may have a chance to present this in front of an audience in their own home (i.e. immediate family – maintain social distance!)

Hello parents and carers! Following the recent lockdown announcements, many of you will be feeling anxious about how to best support students over the coming weeks and months. We’re here to help your child to enjoy and master maths, whether that be in school or at home. We’ll continue to produce daily ‘home learning’ lessons for Years 1-9. Every lesson comes with a short video showing you clearly and simply how to help your child complete the activity successfully. Overviews Early Years video lessons follow our updated Reception Scheme of Learning, which you can see here. Primary lessons follow our Lesson by Lesson Progressions, which you can see here. Secondary lessons follow our secondary Scheme of Learning, which you can see here, along with additional guidance for 2020-21.

Even though staying home from school might feel like a holiday, remind your kids that they’re not on vacation. Assignments, grades, requirements, and tests like state exams, SATs, and ACTs aren’t going away just because classes have moved online.

At this point, the distance learning scenario isn’t entirely new. We have more information about what works for kids and what doesn’t. And the hope is that we — parents, caregivers, teachers, and school leaders — are now better prepared to support kids in their social, emotional, and academic growth during the pandemic.
