License plates are installed on all automated vehicles in India. This license plate (also called a number plate) is issued by the “Regional Transportation Office” (RTO) of each state. Which is the main transport authority. The license plate is mounted on the front and rear of the vehicle. By law, each number plate should be written in Roman numerals with modern Arabic numerals. However in many states it is violated and written in the vernacular. According to other guidelines, these plates should be illuminated at night to appear as well as be otherwise free of text.

Individual motor vehicles and two-wheelers (motor bicycles, scooters) should have black letters on the white plate (ex: KA 01 EK 171). Commercial vehicles such as taxis, trucks, buses, etc. should have black letters on the yellow plate (ex: DL 2C 6011). Foreign embassy vehicles should have white letters on a light brown plate (ex: 11 CD 21). The official vehicle number of the President of India and the Governor of the States is free of plates. Instead, their vehicle carries a golden sign of India on a red plate.
The format of the number plate is as follows.
AA 11 BB 1111
AA is a two letter state code; 11 is a two-digit district code; 1111 is a unique number and BB is a required range, if the number is used up to 9999, then again to give a number with the AA, AB, etc. For example:
GJ 11 CA 1002
The first two letters GJ indicate that the vehicle belongs to the state of Gujarat. The next two figures show the district (as here shows Junagadh district and CA 1002) showing the unique license plate number of the vehicle. In many states (such as Delhi), the district code does not show the front 2, such as DL 2 and not DL 02.
There is an additional code on the number plate in the country’s capital, Delhi.
DL 11 C AA 1111
Where additional code indicates the type of vehicle. For ‘S’ two-wheelers, ‘C’ for motorists or small utility vehicles, ‘P’ for public passenger vehicles such as buses etc., ‘R’ for three-wheelers such as rickshaws, ‘T’ for passenger vehicles and taxis, ‘V’ ‘Used for vans and trucks and’ Y ‘for rental vehicles.
